Back to the continent

Uff! What a long month. I must say, 1 month in Brazil can be a great experience but at the same time, constant heat does affect my brain a little! After hanging out at Profcolor studios, I realized how delayed Brazil is in certain aspects of photography. For example: there was a photographer that for years used a Mamiya RZ76, which I consider one of the best cameras in the world. Unfortunately, film is so so so old school, in such am embarrassing way that he put aside the camera that made him one of the best photographers in his area. He had about 8 Rollei's and I can't count how many Mamiya's...and obviously a pair or to of Nikon's, Canon's and Pentax's! and he told me in great pain that in Brazil, even as an amateur photographer, you'd be laughed at. Let me tell you something about MF...Its a completely different aspect and way of shooting, and here in "Europe", as they like calling it, film is still part of any type of photography, both in studio and location. I'm telling you, I wanted to cry...It was such a sad image. For photography lovers, like you and me, old school is the new school, and let's be honest: digital well never reach the raw, pure quality of our good old film..specially if its medium format!

Today was a very exciting/exausting/great day. Did a very cool workshop at Vega Studios. 3 sets, 2 models. Great experience. Pictures will be up soon on the website www.fabianadelcanton.com (im one of those addicted photographers that cant sleep well if I dont edit everything I can). Anyway, I totally advise you to do one if ur into fashion/portraits/nude etc. Very chilled out and you get great results!

Sic Esperanca

On the 18th I had the pleasure to participate in a charity shoot for Sic esperança calender. I was assisting the photographer Pedro Matos, once again. The celebs also participating in this was Fatima Lopes, the TV presenter and Ze Pedro, a band member from a famous Portuguese band called Xutos e Pontapes. We did the shoot in a private members club called Grémio Literário. Absolutely stunning place, very classy. Reminded me alot of ancient palaces. Looked a bit like Pena Palace inside. Sorry about the bad quality pictures, but was taken from cell phone. I'm happy to say I'm gonna be credited on the calendar which is great!

So, got a last min call to shoot a launch of a party in a disco called BBC in Lisbon. I only went last min because a friend of mine needed. Not very fond of last min. shoots. Not that I'm not capable, only because I find it to be a little unprofessional, but thing is, you might get a sudden tummy pain and you know a doctor friend of yours, and he will help and for cheaper...so you go!
Its crazy how much more people look and respect you with a camera around your neck. I'm 5'2...not exactly tall, but that camera gave me another inch and a half! Was a fun experience, not doing it unless its urgent and pay is well though...not really my thing.

Lecture in Sao Paulo

So, something exciting! I was invited to give a couple of lectures in Sao Paulo in a photography course. Sounds great! Havnt done that before so I'm sure it will be an amazing experience. I must admit, my uni lecturer from LCC, Adrian, used to say photography is all about networking! I have days i'll spend about 6 hours just networking, and lets all agree that Facebook did in fact make life a little bit more easy!So cheers to that!

Umbigo magazine

So yesterday and today too, were 2 ( and still going to be today) exciting assisting days. Yesterday, I assisted a delightful fashion photographer called Pedro Matos. Very chilled out talented guy. A room of very but VERY talented people:make up artist, hairdresser and stylist and all "extras" like me. FOr many hours,7 if I recall, nothing was much done, photography related. 7 hourse of production: getting the model all nice and pretty! After all the pimping up, we finally moved to the location, Graça, old part of Lisbon city, the location was amazing, this little very adorable corner and a pathway. I was amazed what a high fashion team can do. I had these butterflies in my tummy and this huge rush while I was holing the lights. It was so exciting to see the results show up on his Mark II.. The models were amazing!! Made me thinK I wont ever do do another proper shoot without a proper production team...the excitement is much bigger than you imagine!! I'll put up the picture if it comes out online, or else, check out the next Umbigo magazine.
